Shaolin Records Launched 1984 to Produce Long-Form Music Videos
The Coyote began studying music video and movie production at UCLA in 1983. His first UCLA class was "Legal Aspects of The Music Business," by attorney Richard Schulenberg. Before attorney Schulenberg went to launch SONY MUSIC, he took the time to help Richard Connor launch his music publishing company, SHAOLIN MUSIC, and independent record company, SHAOLIN RECORDS.
Attorney Richard Schulenberg wrote all of our Shaolin Records legal agreements, that we've used from 1984 to 2010, now. Perhaps we should have attorney Richard rewrite our contracts. Technologies and distribution have changed greatly in the past 25 years.
Coyote began working in music videos in 1985 with his first video being REO SPEEDWAGON. Coyote also worked on the REO SPEEDWAGON video "One More Lonely Knight," for which his production company came in 2nd place that year to Van Halen's music video with David Lee Roth spinning Kung Fu swords.
Now, in 2010, we are going to produce videos of Coyote, a.k.a. Buddha Zhen, performing on double sabers. Coincidence?
Ironically though, Coyote was unable to produce one single music video for his bands or rock opera during 1985 to 2000.
After returning to California in 2000, Coyote enlisted his family, children, and Kung Fu students to become his filming crew at the local Tujunga cable television studio. The cable company was operating out of a Tujunga high school theatre department. Coyote and his crew cut a few half hour music shows here, but we weren't satisfied.
The next year we produced some half hour concerts at the Van Nuys Cable Company studios. These came out much better quality. We will be releasing some of these live performances when possible. These LIVE CONCERTS in the Van Nuys studio were taped while recording the Coyote Radio Tujunga album.
Despite the editing "on the fly" done as these Van Nuy performances were taped, these are our first music videos of American Zen.
Finally, Christmas 2008, some American Zen fans talked Coyote into spending a day being filmed in the Montrose area. Realizing he'd have very little control over these videos, Coyote was mostly interested in getting something on YouTube.com So, during the Christmas holidays, Scott Karahadian and Jarrod Weinstein shot Coyote at a local park and in Jarrod's garage.
Director Scott, and cameraman Jarrod, rigged up some green poster boards to create a "green screen." This enabled Scott to add special effects to the video. The first of these videos to be posted on YouTube.com is "Great Salt Lake."
"Great Salt Lake" is the first music video of American Zen with post production editing, making it the first real music video of American Zen.
