An Interview With The Author of History of Zen from A to Z:
Richard Del Connor / The Hippy Coyote
Write an entire book in one day? Coyote did. Richard Del Connor, also known as The Hippy Coyote of American Zen, is also the Kung Fu master Buddha Zhen of Shaolin Chi Mantis Traditional Buddhist Gongfu and Taijiquan. Coyote has been a poet since age 8, completing his first book of poetry in 1974. He was a photographer and worked in music videos and Hollywood feature films while attending UCLA Motion Picture Program.
In 2011, Coyote was visited by Satan. ("Saten" is how Coyote was told to spell his name.) "I woke up from sleeping and somehow could see and hear the angels of Heaven talking and kind of arguing," explains Coyote. This vision of Coyote's continued as Coyote's soul was ushered out of Heaven and brought back to his Montrose bedroom where Coyote began writing down what he saw and heard.
Coyote said, "From that point on my visions were definitely transmitted to me telepathically by Saten. I saw a constant flow of images -- like watching a movie. Unfortunately I could not keep up with the images and about 15 to 20% of what I saw is lost forever. That's another reason I'm suspicious of the truth about this. If I had conjured up these images and stories from my own subconscious -- how come I haven't had the slightest glimpse of the angels and Heaven in the past couple years. Like watching a movie, it's hard to remember and be able to draw all the images or write down all the dialogue of the movies. That's what this experience was like. I honestly thought I would be able to remember some of the images and details I skipped over... but I never have."
So what does Satan (Saten) have to say? He tells the story of Adam and Eve with a comical story of how they were named by the angels. Saten transmitted the entire story to Richard through the English alphabet. "I think Saten was looking for a way to communicate -- in a way I would understand," says Coyote.
As the history of all time is reduced to our 26 letter alphabet Richard apologizes, "I fell asleep before writing the last few letters. I really thought I'd remember those images and stories. It broke my heart the next morning when I struggled to remember what I'd seen and heard."
Question: Why did Saten choose you, Richard?
Coyote: If I understand correctly it was because of the mistakes I'd made in my epic poem, The AntiChrist, and because he knew I would write all this down. I was convenient for him.
Question: Does that make you the right-hand of Satan?
Coyote: I decided to be journalistic and just present the information as clearly and accurately as I could. My interpretations are going to exist in how I translated the visuals into words -- but I did my best to be a good reporter. The information flowed so fast I hardly had a chance to ask any questions.
Question: Does Satan seek to destroy humanity?
Coyote: Well, I think our overpopulating the Earth is a testament to his helping us -- not hurting us.
Question: Is this really a book about Zen Buddhism?
Coyote: Absolutely. One of the original translations or meanings of the word "Zen" is "Universal Truth." And this book is definitely about Universal Truth.
Question: Will Satan be contacting you again?
Coyote: There is as much chance of that as there is of him visiting you -- but maybe he likes me a little more than you. I don't know.
